Boys track team captures first-ever district title

The Badin High School boys track program celebrated a milestone Saturday, winning its first-ever district championship with a Division II title at New Richmond High.

“We’re very proud of this group,” said head coach Jason Starks. “A lot of young men stepped up with outstanding performances. They brought their ‘A’ game. It was truly a team effort.”

The boys had three first-place finishes and four more second-place finishes to outlast second-place Roger Bacon 109-85 among 13 teams in the event.

Badin will send nine boys in 10 events to the regional meet at Piqua High on Thursday and Saturday.

District winners for BHS included the 4x800 relay of seniors Kyle Manuel, Nick Rand, Josh Wolpert and Sam Krabacher, with one of the top D-II times in the state at 8:13.31; senior Nick Rand in the 800 run and junior Caleb Meyer in the 300 hurdles.

Second-place finishers included senior Krabacher in the long jump and the 1,600 run, senior Manuel in the 400 run, and the 4x400 relay of seniors Krabacher, Manuel, Rand and sophomore Aidan Drake.

“This is an impressive bunch of guys,” said Badin athletic director Geoff Melzer. “Our coaches have done a great job getting student-athletes into the program and maximizing their potential on the track. We had three events go to state last year and we’re hoping for even more this year.”

Other BHS boys who will compete in Piqua include seniors Matt Schweinefuss and Seth Thompson and sophomore Davon Hartmann-Starks.

Schweinefuss was fourth in the 800 run and joined Thompson, Hartmann-Starks and Meyer on the 4x200 relay team that placed third. Hartmann-Starks was also fourth in the long jump.

Meyer will also compete in the 110 hurdles at the regional, placing third at district; while Wolpert is headed north in the 3,200 run (fourth).

On the girls side, Badin freshman Paige Parrish qualified for the regional following a fourth-place finish in the 1,600 run in the girls D-II district at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium. That’s a nice debut year for Parrish, who also qualified for the regionals in cross country.
