Badin High girls’ basketball set to play in ‘Hoosiers’ gym on Jan. 10

Badin High School girls head basketball coach Tom Sunderman and Lutheran St. Charles (Mo.) High girls head basketball coach Erin Luttschwager are excited to announce that Badin and Lutheran St. Charles have signed a contract to play a game in Knightstown, Ind., on Monday, Jan. 10.

The game will be played in the historic gym where the 1986 movie “Hoosiers” was filmed.

“This is going to be a very enjoyable showcase game,” Sunderman said. “It will be a contest between two excellent teams played at a nationally-known site. The girls did not know until today that it was going to happen, and they are thrilled about it.”

Lutheran St. Charles is a private school in Saint Peters, Mo., with an excellent basketball tradition, including a run to the Elite 8 in the state of Missouri when current Badin senior Mahya Lindesmith was a sophomore there.

“I’m beyond excited,” said Lindesmith, who wiped away tears of joy when Sunderman informed the team. “It will be so great to see all of the girls again, and to play against them, it’s just insane. We’ve talked about it over the years, but now the fact that it’s actually going to happen is amazing. It will be a really good game, too. I’m just so excited!”

The 5-foot-6 Lindesmith led the Rams with 13.9 points a game in her first season in Badin green a year ago, and is one of seven returning players who made starts for the team. BHS finished 18-10 and reached the Division II Elite 8 for the first time since 2004, going 11-2 after a 7-8 start.

Lindesmith and her running mate at guard, 5-foot-10 Jada Pohlen, were first team Greater Catholic League Coed Division selections, and Lindesmith has committed to play women’s college basketball at Fairmont State University in Fairmont, W.Va.

“We’re looking forward to the season,” said Sunderman, whose Rams open at home against St. Ursula Academy on Friday, Nov. 19. “We’ve got a lot of people back and the expectations are high. I know our girls and our coaching staff are going to work hard to meet those expectations.”

The matchup with Lutheran St. Charles includes a reserve game at 6 p.m., with the varsity set to tip off at 8 p.m.

Among the challenging 2021-22 schedule for the Badin girls is one other showcase game, against Wheelersburg at Eastern Brown High on Saturday, Jan. 22. The game with Lutheran St. Charles replaces a previously scheduled home game with Northwest High that has been cancelled.
