Badin, Hamilton set first-ever boys hoop game; will resume high school football series in 2023

Badin and Hamilton high schools will open the upcoming boys’ basketball season with a first-ever game between the two schools, Badin Athletic Director Geoff Melzer announced today in conjunction with a release from the Hamilton City School District.

That commitment goes along with other high-profile games, including a two-year football agreement to play Week 1 of the high school football season beginning in 2023.

“We’re excited to get these games on the schedule,” Melzer said. “We’re in the same city, both schools have competitive athletic programs, and we’re glad to expand our athletic footprint in what should be some highly anticipated meetings between the schools.”

“We’re very pleased to resume our relationship with Hamilton High School in so many areas,” Badin High School Principal Brian Pendergest said. “This is important for the schools and the community. I give a lot of credit to Hamilton High School Athletic Director Missy Harvey and the administration at Hamilton High for working to put these games together.”

Badin will play at Hamilton High in the opening game of the upcoming boys’ basketball season on Saturday, Nov. 26. The teams have not met in a regular season game since Hamilton High School was reconsolidated from Garfield and Taft high schools for the 1980-81 season.

“It will be fun,” said Badin boys basketball coach Pat Kreke. “What a great way to open the season and get people geared up for boys basketball in this city. Hamilton High has been a great basketball program over the years – I know the two schools have played in a couple of previews some years ago, but regular season games are long overdue.”

Badin and Hamilton have met four times on the football field over the years -- in 1980 and 1981, and again in 1999 and 2000. Badin has won three of the four games, including a 16-10 final in the most recent meeting in 2000.

“I love it,” said Badin head football coach Nick Yordy of the scheduling. “I understand that people look at size and numbers and whatever, but the students all know each other and like to compete. It’s a great way to bring a great community together.”

The two schools will also resume an on-and-off girls’ basketball series this season. Hamilton will play at Badin on Jan. 30, 2023 – the teams have not played since 2018.

Melzer indicated that the schools had been in productive talks for some time to set up the games.

“We played playoff football as well as boys and girls soccer tournament games at Hamilton’s Schwarm Stadium in the fall, and that helped jump-start some of these conversations,” Melzer said. “Missy Harvey and I got together, with important input from others, and were able to schedule these games. All of us are very pleased.”

Badin and Hamilton have regularly played baseball and softball, among other sports, and are in discussions to solidify annual games all across the sports schedule.
