Four Badin student-athletes commit to play in college

Badin High School recognized four student-athletes who have committed to play sports in college during a fall Signing Day on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

“We have a strong athletic program at Badin because our student athletes are willing to work so hard,” Athletic Director Geoff Melzer said. “The hard work by these four students has earned them a college athletic opportunity – that says a lot for their efforts. We’re very proud of them.”

The signing involves three sports as two girls will play women’s college soccer.

Ava Hess will play women’s soccer at Southern Indiana University, a Division I school in Evansville. She is the daughter of Howard and Patti Hess of Hamilton and a graduate of St. Ignatius School. She plans to major in Business.

Katie Singleton will play women’s soccer at Bluffton University, a Division III school in northwestern Ohio. Katie is the daughter of Marc and Sarah Singleton of Hamilton and a graduate of Beautiful Savior Lutheran School. She plans to major in Sports Management.

Jordan Brockman will play men’s volleyball at Central State University, a Division II school in Wilberforce. He is the son of Anitra Brockman of Cincinnati and a graduate of Pleasant Run Middle School. He plans to major in Sports Management.

Abby White will play women’s volleyball at Cumberland University, an NAIA school in Lebanon, Tennessee. She is the daughter of Angie and Tim White of Cincinnati and a graduate of St. John Dry Ridge School. She plans to major in Exercise Science.

“It takes good players, good leaders and good personalities to make successful teams, and these student-athletes certainly check all of those boxes,” Melzer said. “The colleges are getting young people who know how to win and care about being successful.”

Ava Hess has been an all-Greater Catholic League selection throughout her career as a standout defender for the Rams. She and forward Katie Singleton have played for three district champions and three GCL Coed division champions while wearing Badin green-and-white.

Jordan Brockman has earned numerous accolades during his volleyball career. He was a key member of Badin’s 2022 Division II state champions, being named first team GCL Coed Division. He was the Player of the Year in the division in 2023, when Badin reached the Elite 8. He’ll play for his mother, Anitra Brockman, at Central State, and it was Coach Brockman who directed the Rams to the 2022 state title.

As a senior in Badin’s girls’ volleyball program, Abby White has been a part of four straight district championships, three straight regional finalists and went to the Division II state semifinals as a junior. The Badin varsity volleyball team is 85-26 over the past four years.

Two other Badin student-athletes – both juniors – have already committed to play Division I women’s college volleyball. Luci Heid (St. John Dry Ridge) is headed for Northern Kentucky University, and Olivia Schmidt (Lakota Plains) is en route to Wright State University. Both schools are in the Horizon League, so the current teammates will be friendly rivals once they hit the college court.

Badin will have two more Signing Days as necessary in the winter and spring. A total of 19 students from the immediate Class of 2023 are now playing college sports.
