Sixteen Badin students set to compete at BPA state convention

Sixteen Badin High School students will compete at state in the Business Professionals of America competition after a strong showing in the BPA Region 17 event at Butler Tech in late January.

“The students worked continuously on their event heading into the regionals, and did a terrific job with it,” said Mr. Robert Schooley, Badin’s Business and Marketing teacher and BPA moderator. “They’re excited to advance to state and I’m confident they’ll have additional success in the next competition.”

Senior Shea Scarborough, who is the Region 17 president, led the way with a pair of first place finishes – in Prepared Speech as well as in Human Resource Management.

Junior Naomi Samples had a first place in Ethics and Professionalism and a second place in Business Law and ethics.

Junior Gabby Martinez had a first in Small Business Management and a third in Prepared Speech, while Sam Pendergest – the Region 17 Historian – had a first in Fundamental Accounting and a third Interview Skills.

Other first place finishers included junior Rogue Carruthers (Intermediate Word Processing), junior Arlene Cortez (Small Business Management), sophomore Evelyn Salinas (Presentation Individual), and senior Madison Zorb (Legal Office Procedures).

“Region 17 is the largest region in the state of Ohio, and, in fact, the largest BPA region in the nation,” Schooley pointed out. “So, our students face an immense challenge to even make it to state. And in some events, only the winner advances. So it was quite a challenge and our students did very well.”

The state conference and competition is set for Thursday and Friday, March 7-8, at the Columbus Convention Center.

Senior Abby Rengering is headed to state after three strong finishes – 2nd in Interview Skills, and 3rd in Fundamental Accounting as well as Fundamental Spreadsheets.

Other students with multiple state-bound performances included senior Nate Ostendorf, 2nd in Basic Office Systems and 2nd in Small Business Management; and sophomore Miley Zorb, 2nd in Fundamental Word Processing and 2nd in Legal Office Procedures

Also headed to state are senior Grace Glover, 2nd in Fundamental Accounting; junior Macbeth Flores-Ramirez, 2nd in Prepared Speech; senior Shelby Mulcare, 2nd in Ethics and Professionalism; sophomore Natalie Knapp 3rd in Fundamental Word Processing; and senior Nicolai Salgado-Urcia, 3rd in Integrated Office Application.

While students may have qualified for state in more than one event in the regional competition, they must select just one to compete in at BPA state.

Three other Badin students did well but were in categories where only the first place winner advanced: senior Ian Price, 2nd in Small Business Management; sophomore Jonathan Babb, 3rd in Extemporaneous Speech; and sophomore Maren Bultman, 3rd in Graphic Design Promotion.
